Business expansion and new facilities for LOGIBEL!

Lac-Mégantic, March 25, 2021 — LOGIBEL inc. starts major work to expand its Lac-Mégantic’s facilities and to add new services in Beauce. The investments, which are nearly $ 5 million, are partly funded by the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ), through the Programme d’aide visant la réduction ou l’évitement des émissions de gaz à effet de serre par le développement du transport intermodal (PREGTI).

At the Lac-Mégantic head office, the expansion of the transshipment yard will facilitate the shipping and reception of goods, both for raw materials and for manufactured or bulk products. In Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon, the new facilities official opening is scheduled for early summer 2021. Customers in Chaudière-Appalaches and the Quebec City area will enjoy a site allowing transshipment and storage over one million square feet.

Those projects will allow the customers to reduce their environmental impact by using more rail transport as an alternative to road transport. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is estimated at more than 6,439 tonnes per year. In addition, the operations will have a positive effect on road safety, by helping to reduce the number of trucks circulating in the Estrie and Chaudière-Appalaches regions, as well as on the roads of the province.

LOGIBEL’s General manager, Mr Béland Audet, worked very closely with several economic players in order to develop its projects, including Développement économique Nouvelle-Beauce (DENB). The establishment of the Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon rail transshipment center will support the strengthening of the sector’s economic base by improving access to the main foreign markets, in addition to increasing the benefits for industries using LOGIBEL’s services by offering them a competitive alternative to freight transport.

The business expansion and the new facilities will contribute to create and maintain a dozen jobs and at least 20 indirect jobs.

“I am very pleased that our government is providing financial assistance of up to nearly $2.2 million for LOGIBEL’s expansion projects. Its new centre in Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon and the expansion of its site in Lac-Mégantic will promote intermodality in the transport of goods. Not only does intermodality allow us to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions through the complementary use of different modes of transport, but it also makes our companies more efficient and more competitive on international markets. We are proud to support such initiatives that promote economic dynamism.”

François Bonnardel, Minister of Transport and Minister Responsible for the Estrie Region

“The construction of a transshipment site is great news. This will promote the creation and maintenance of jobs in a region where the transport of goods is an important driver of economic development. Our government’s investment in this project is a tangible step in supporting our local businesses and greener travel across the province.”

Luc Provençal, MNA for Beauce-Nord

“I am pleased with this announcement, both as the MNA for Mégantic and as chair of the Québec government rail transport committee. LOGIBEL’s projects are in line with government priorities in terms of transport safety and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. I congratulate LOGIBEL for its commitment and determination to continue developing its services and activities.”

François Jacques, MNA for Mégantic and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing (municipal affairs component)

“I am very happy to finally realize this important project. We have been working on it for several years. The establishment of a new transshipment center will allow LOGIBEL to expand its activities to cover a large part of southern Quebec. And above all, by increasing the number of freight wagons, we are responding to a mission that is particularly close to my heart, to reduce our collective environmental impact. The more we use rail transport, the smaller our footprint is on environment.”

Béland Audet, General manager, LOGIBEL inc.

“This project is excellent news for Développement économique Nouvelle-Beauce. It will stimulate the industrial sector, and will offer more opportunities to businesses in our region. It will meet the needs expressed by several entrepreneurs in connection with the storage and transshipment of goods. We are always very happy to be able to collaborate with LOGIBEL and all of our companies in Nouvelle-Beauce in their development projects.”

Claude Drouin P.C. Director of Business Development and Industrial Commissioner, Développement économique Nouvelle-Beauce
